Making church life easier to find at Wellshire

Wellshire Presbyterian Church in Denver, Colorado had a welcoming, community-minded congregation, but its old website was cumbersome for visitors. The menu was not descriptive or intuitive, making it harder to discover the people, ministries and opportunities that shaped the church’s life.

This 1,400-member suburban church described itself as liturgical, progressive, mission-focused and engaged. People were drawn to its music, and its preaching followed the lectionary. Its local mission group was actively building a connection to a local elementary school and providing groceries and other supplies to those in need, while the hunger task force supported local nonprofits financially.

Wellshire wanted visitors to understand that community and find their own way into it. Through the Matthew 25 project, the church had taken a deep dive into its commitment to greater diversity. Its thriving preschool, or PDO, also needed more focus and attention as an important ministry of the church.

Those priorities gave the new website a clear purpose. Wellshire outlined what visitors and members needed:

• A functional homepage with a calendar and upcoming events
• A video tour of PDO
• A clear, concise explanation of what the church believes and who it is as a community of faith
• Ways for people to get involved
• Giving integration and a donate button
• A welcome for visitors, using seeker-centric language such as “are you a” questions
• Language welcoming youth, even though there were no current kids in that group
• Access to the livestream
• An area for members

The new website brought these pieces together so visitors could learn about Wellshire, explore its ministries and find practical ways to participate. The preschool received the attention the church had identified as a priority, alongside clearer information for people encountering the congregation for the first time.

Keeping that communication going mattered during the project, too. Wellshire came to us during a time of transition in pastoral staff. Through a short-term Virtual Assistant arrangement, we used the knowledge and support Worship Times offers to help them through a stressful period until they were able to take on their full communication duties.
